AGATHA CHRISTIE COLLECTION
This collection started being developed in mid-2019. The publisher wanted to make something classy but young. Refresh the Queen of Crime's brazilian hard cover books, using key objects as a connection to which story.
The use of photography was a must go. The need to serve a captive audience but also draw in new readers was on high stakes to the whole series. I made a graphic research of Agatha Christie's books through the years blending references, to bring a style which it dearly called 'fresh vintage'.
First, I made some sketches trying fonts and layering colored shapes of possible objects from a list the publisher gave me. Later they would be photographed in a studio. Then, a more 'accurate' image with a selected typeface and assembled images.
This was not quite what the publisher and I wanted. The layout was to rigid. To much elements and limited typography could make a collection of almost 80 books get boring to fast. This time I tried a bolder design. To obtain more flexibility, I cut some elements and tested hand lettering. âââââââ
The publisher loved the idea and suggested a color scheme for this collection: each decade should have a range of two or three colors. This way, it would follow a color attached to the original book release. With the single object, the resilient lettering and colors, we were ready to shoot some photos in the studio.
And this is the final result of the first 10 books (released in 2020):
